KU graduate’s space project gets £2.5M boost

A project by KU graduate Dr Jack-James Marlow has secured a £2.5 million boost from the European Space Agency (ESA) and aims to be the first in the UK to launch satellites from Europe.

Scottish-based rocket company, Skyrora, where Marlow is Head of Engineering, aims to accelerate the development of the Skyrora XL project – launching an orbital rocket which will carry small satellites into orbit from the UK – a key Government ambition.

“The funding from ESA and UK Space Agency will assist in ou

Southeastern apologises as KU student fails to find accessible carriages

Southeastern Railway (SE) has issued an apology after a Kingston University pharmacy student failed to find an accessible carriage for wheelchair users on a train to work.

Osayuki Igbinoba expressed her concern on Twitter two weeks ago and said she had to “stay by the doors and keep moving as I was in other people’s way” after not finding an accessible carriage.

“I complained to Southeastern about this. They were in denial and said there was an accessible carriage on the train. They also said

Indian farmers' protest: Peacefulness and KU graduate's flourishing paper

On the outskirts of the Indian capital Delhi, thousands of the country’s largest farmers are protesting. Since the government passed three farm acts that may shrink farmers’ incomes, tens of thousands of Indians have been demanding the repeal of recent laws.

In chilly temperatures and rain, Indians have been protesting since 26 November and KU graduate Gurdeep Dhaliwal is there in the middle of the action – looking at the events through a camera lens.

‘Self-eating’ rocket to be tested at new KU lab

A revolutionary rocket that consumes its own structure as it hurtles into space is set to have its engine tested next year at Kingston University.

The UK Ministry of Defence has pledged £90,000 for the development of the ‘autophage’ engine, which is set to be tested at a new KU rocket testing laboratory on the Roehampton Vale campus.

The revolutionary engine is being built by researchers at the University of Glasgow’s James Watt School of Engineering.

Student vaccinations at KU ‘the ultimate hope’

After a successful Covid-19 vaccine rollout to the highest risk groups in the community, Kingston University hopes to vaccinate students once the government guidance allows doing so.

Head of Public Affairs and Insight at Kingston University, Jennifer Edwards, says that students should be able to get a jab in order to feel safe when they return to campus.

“That’s the ultimate hope. Hopefully, the government will roll it out to everyone, and I think they are certainly on track to do so.

KU graduate's dream of woven bags around the world

Launched in 2014, KU Fashion graduate Akosua Afriyie-Kumi’s own brand AAKS currently sells its bags in 64 stores worldwide.

In her home country Ghana, Kumi has developed and realized her dream of establishing a business but says that being able to work with people from different backgrounds encourages her to strive for more.

“Coming from a family of entrepreneurs I have always toyed with the idea of owning my own business. I grew up around basket bags as a child in Ghana. I used to give them a

Vaccine hopes but don't drop your guard

Positive results from a vaccine trial have been welcome news in the fight against coronavirus but with the approach of winter students still need to stay alert and look after their health.

Senior Lecturer in Haematology and Immunology at Kingston University, Dr Terry Gaymes, believes that the information about the new vaccine, released earlier this week, could make it more difficult for people to remember to social distance.

“They can see the vaccines are around the corner and might think, ‘Oh

From Buttons to Hollywood: Paul Don Smith dedicates latest work to his dog

If you have ever walked around Brick Lane or the Shoreditch area, you have probably seen the work of one of London’s most prolific street artists, Paul Don Smith.

Chasing his passion for 35 years now, Smith has done it all – brought massive crowds to see his art shows, produced artwork for Hollywood movies, painted murals for celebrities and, of course, decorated London walls and buildings with his drawings.

“This is my origin. This is how I started all of this. I always keep the faith, I’m al
